“every single night” is heart breaking and lovely without falling into absolute self-gratifying musical misery. face it, somethings (and people, and proclamations…) are just worth the wait.

rest in peace mca

fans each have their favorite beasties album, song, memory. some of us were lucky to see them in concert throughout these years (or spot them skating in the east village). you cannot get cooler than the beastie boys. i repeat, you cannot get cooler than the beastie boys. when news broke yesterday that mca had passed, all of us paused for a minute and felt this pulling away of a personal era. time elapsed in one flip of a record.

indeed, yesterday marked the end of the beastie boys, too; a harsh reminder of the somber reality that everything in this world is temporary. and art lives on. mca was a good person, that raspy voice and social consciousness made him a class act and a creative force. he was a father and husband who fought three courageous years to live through cancer. he evolved, like mike d and ad-rock, from delinquency into a deeper person without losing his sense of humor, joy or edge. he tried to do something bigger with his gifts, while staying humble (see: milarepa foundation). he was spiritual and present.

his presence in this world will be missed terribly by all us who were lucky enough to enjoy even a little part of him—even from a distance—for the precious time that we did. thank you adam yauch. in your wake, journey, search for peace and ultimate letting go, you left us with so much.

“i wanna say a little something that’s long overdue/ the disrespect to women has got to be through/ to all the mothers, and the sisters and the wives and friends/ i wanna offer my love and respect to the end.” —mca, “sure shot”

things that make you go hmmm

well, en francais they don’t pronounce “h” so really, this should be titled: “things that make you go mmmm”…

anyway, see how “N.I.P.” gets appropriated for the campaign of French presidential candidate Francois Hollande, the potential next president of France and a socialist. Kind of an exciting montage, kind of weirdly displaced as well. So what you got Sarkozy?

R.I.P.: GURU

April 19th, 2012 by Giselle

I was really lucky to see Gang Starr live a bunch in my New York days (best show would be a battle between one they did for a snowboarding/hip-hop festival in Vermont (anyone remember FRIDGE magazine? yeah, didn’t think so) versus a show they did with M.O.P. at The Limelight, which was pretty epic.

I also got to hang out at D & D Studios and interview Guru a bunch of times over the years for places like SOHH.Com, MTV and VIBE. (Told you I was lucky.) Guru was definitely a complicated and challenging dude—genuinely troubled too—who also happened to be one the best MCs the game has ever seen (who can mistake that flow for anyone else? so unique), making his match with DJ Premier as Gang Starr legendary (that’s unarguable people and few things are unarguable in this world). With Guru’s passing two years ago today, any hopes of a Gang Starr reunion got buried, as well—and that’s a sad ending.

But we have the music and the memories, don’t we? And somewhere in the next level cosmos he’s got Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal for days and forever. So we can take a moment to celebrate and be grateful for that.
